Music Sites For Inspiration

Music sites that i explored were billboard and RollingStone. These two music sites are very influential as they both contain Hip-hop. They also make magazines which feature upcoming artists with their new album and magazine advert covers.

Storyboard

This is the storyboard for our chosen song. The song we chose to do was Moment of Silence by Lucidious ft. Josh Woods. This is a narrative story board as we have gone for a narrative based video, instead of a performance based video. There are still performance based actions used, but it is mainly narrative.

Narrative Theorists

Vladamir Propp was a Russian critic who analysed hundreds of fairy tales in the 1920s. He came up with the concept of defining characters to clearly defined purposes, rolls and functions for the story.

We could use this theorist towards our video when evaluating our characters and the rolls they play. For example in our narrative structure we are hoping to reveal the reality of unhappy family life, the affects of bullying and the after affects of loss. Here we have come to the conclusion to use one character to express the emotions and realities behind these situations. Therefore we have defined the roll of our character as someone who will exploit the realities of emotional ordeals.

Tzvetan Todorov was a literary theorist who suggested that at the main protagonist of a story always starts with a state of equilibrium (where life is normal and happy). The state of normality is then disrupted from an outside force and an event of resolution occurs to reinstate the equilibrium.

We have decided to use this theorist in terms of instating an equilibrium or sorts at the beginning of introducing our narratives main character/ protagonist. This will be shortly lived however because our protagonist will be facing difficulties in all angles of his life (socially and with his family as well as through the elements of social media and the internet). These angles and disruptions will allow us to conform to the theory as they will act as outside forces which disorganise the equilibrium. Unfortunately we are exploiting the realities of how some people would choose to go in situations like this by presenting our character as someone who will never encounter their equilibrium again due to them committing suicide as a drastic measure.

These are artists which have inspired what out final image for our artist looks like. We have ideas from each artist and incorporated it into our own artist. Each artist here has a very casual style. This is something that we have decided  to go by as it doesn't just relate to Hip-hop, but also pop as well. Witt lowry was probably the biggest  inspiration as he always wears hoodies  and tight skinny jeans. This is a style that  could easily be used for our artist. The bomber jacket has mainly come from Eminem as he is shown to wear a bomber in most videos, after 2012, relating to the tome of Hip-hop. 

Final Clothing Ideas

As production has gone on, we have decided to go for a casual look for our artist. We don't want our artist to wear stereotypical Hip-hop clothing as we have taken inspiration from artists who wear casual outfits.  With a casual look, i believe it can fit in with the old style of Hip-hop, instead of integrating into the new side.

These are photos we have taken in the White room at school. These shots have been edited in post production to turn them into black and white. As these shots look really good in black and white, we have contemplated turning out video into black and white to make it stylistically similar, but also because we believe it would look really nice.

My video will feature a simplistic but stylistic feature, adapting a predominately slow paced performance based video, emotionally connecting with the lyrics and the audience.

My group and I have decided to call the artist distinct to convey that he is a new artist and create a new sound which will become distinct in the Hip - hop genre.

Our Chosen Song - Moment of Silence

Moment Of Silence was the chosen song my group and I decided on doing. The reason for this is because it has a slow, methodical beat which we can recreate and have a slow, simple and effective music video. We are hoping to film the video in a white room, outside and possibly in a car. Depending on how it looks, I then might convert my music video into black and white, or add an old film grain effect onto my video.

Distinct is an upcoming artist in the Hip-hop genre. Distinct’s latest release, ‘Moment of Silence’ from his new album ‘Judicial Independence’, was released 6th September 2017 and reached Number 1 within 2 days of release.

Short List Of 5 Possible Songs

The reason i have chosen these songs is because i believe that each one is stylistically similar, but each topic is different from the rest. They all have different meanings behind them as well which makes them each different. I think that performing anyone of these songs would be really exciting and enjoyable as i love all of these songs.

The reason i chose Best Friend by Yelawolf is because i love the pace and the meaning behind the songs. Also, it  contains one of the best rap performances by Eminem half way through the song. it is as motivational as it is powerful. I think that as this song hasn't got a narrative structure behind it, i feel that it would be easy to make it primarily performaced based. As my group are thinking of doing a narrative video however, this song wont really fit.

My next  song is by Logic. This hard hitting song about suicide can have a narrative structure and also a performance based structure. I feel that this song would be a great candidate as it is very powerful towards the listener. However, i feel that my group will have to find willing people who would star in the video as the main artist and the featured artists. This is then followed  by the style they will have to wear which causes multiple issues  because  if the  style isnt right, then the video isnt going to look believable.

Eminem's Guts Over Fear ft.  Sia is my next chosen song as i believe this song is very motivational and very powerful. As i will be staring in the video, i feel that i can match the  style eminem gives off. But, as Eminems voice doesnt match my look, i think the lip syncing wont work. The song however is very powerful and wonderful to listen too.

Dreaming With Our Eyes Open is the next  song i have chosen. This is a short  song with a fast paced rapper Witt Lowry. The song isn't very fast until the ending which is built up as the music hypes  up the audience and he matches  each beat with every syllable perfectly.  As the song is  short and doesnt contain any other  singers, i think this is one of the songs that i will definitely be considering to make. The  clothing and the style of  the artist  is also easy  to  recreate as  it is very casual.

The last song i have chosen is  called Moment of Silence by the artist  Lucidious. This is a 5 minute, emotional duet, featuring Josh Woods on the chorus. The song is slow paced rap which reminisces over his life. The artists  clothing is very simple as it is casual. The featured artist  however is tricky to do as we need to find someone who will match his vocals and his style.

Distinct (born 10th December 1994 as Daniel William Ink) is an American Rapper and songwriter. Daniel was signed into Interscope Records in 2010 and took the stage name Distinct in 2013. Distinct’s first single, ‘Success’ as a part of his first album ‘The Essential Introduction’, was released 13th April 2015 and sold 850,000 copies in America. This single reached Number 3 in the US Billboard Hot 100. The Essential Introduction also featured Eminem and Logic in the track ‘Best Friend’. Music Video - Clothing Ideas

For my music video, I am going to got for a design of black, white trainers, black and blue jeans and khaki. I will also wear a bomber jacket in some of the scenes as that item of clothing has increasingly become more popular in the Hip hop genre. 

For my Music video, I have decided to wear casual clothing but also keeping in line with the conventions of a hip hop artist. Because our song is "low-key", our artist is not going to wear extravagant clothing and look slightly basic. We have taken this idea from other Hip hop artists like Witt Lowry and  Lucidious.

Recreation Task - Post-Production / Production

The people who worked  with us were George Silke, Charlee Fear, Frank Parnell, Isabel Denney-Foster, James Meadows and myself. Each person was designated certain roles. For Frank, isabel and i, we were performing in the recreation. Charlee was  directing, George and James  were both on the camera and editing. As  there  were a lot of people in our group, we took it upon ourselves to complete the whole song instead of a minute. Isabel also made the story board for the recreation and carefully analysed  each shot used and the timing of each shot so we knew which part was whos and where to stop and start  filming. We tried  to correlate the outfits as best we could and we ended up with similar looks. The denim jack i wear is baggy, where as in the video it is tight and well fitted on Kanye  West. We also had to adjust the clothing worn by Isabel as the clothing in the video is not appropriate in  the school environment.

During Post - Production, our editors worked hard to match each shot to the timings. Luckily, our story board was well laid out and all we had to do was match the lips  to the song. The editors took it as section. My section, Isabel's section and Frank's section. These sections included  just sticking our characters in, then filling it with the other sections. Unfortunately, we found out we were missing some shots, so we decided to just replace those shots with duplicates. This sorted out the problem. The black bars in the editing was easily  done in the editing panel on Premiere Pro.

The music video that my group have chosen to recreate is four Five Seconds by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney. our group is of a large size, we have chosen to recreate the entire video. We are planning to mirror each shot as well  as we can. The  lighting is going to be a problem to recreate as a lot of it was done it post production. As we are not experienced in post production software, we will find it hard to copy the lighting exactly.

This is our Lip sync video. Myself, George Garrity, George Silke, Frank Parnell and Isabel all took part in the lip sync activity. The song we chose was Chain by Fleetwood Mac.

The song we chose to do was The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. This is because it is an easy song to replicate. It also contains a woman singing along side the man which is helpful due to having a girl in the group. With just a male song, it wouldn't look very good as it would be disjunctive to the task.
